A few years ago I went through a huge transition with moving countries, saying goodbye to friends and family, dealing with my parents being unwell and not knowing who I am and or who I want to be. The hardest part was letting go of my friends and watching the dynamics of the relationships change whilst the geographical distance between us grew.
I found this time tough because I had trouble finding people that could help me grow and make me feel at home. Everyone has their fair share of troubles, worries, mistakes and failures. These are all necessary because they make us who we are and teach us about who we don’t want to be. But it’s always harder when you go through difficult times without your loved ones around you.
I’ve been blessed with crossing paths with many beautiful people and have formed friendships that are unbreakable, despite the distance between us. But there’s a difference between relationships that you have around you everyday and those that you carry sacred and close to your heart. The people around you on a daily basis have the advantage of immersing you with their love and presence; whilst those that are away can’t be as involved in your life as you would like them to be.
After almost four years of struggling with being away from my loved ones and dear friends, I came across a group of people who changed my life forever; they became my superheroes. At first I was hesitant and skeptical because it seemed too good to be true and mainly because I didn’t believe that superheroes exist. But soon I realised that I was wrong.
It all began when I got the opportunity to work closely with a group of people who have inspired me beyond words and who have touched my heart. I am overwhelmed by the blessing of how so many beautiful people can be in one place at the same time. For the past 2.5 years we have worked closely together; we’ve been through tough times and we’ve had many moments of joy and laughter. I had found myself amongst a group of people that I connected to on a very deep level and who were surrounding me every day with their love and support. It’s a blessing to be around those that inspire you to grow and become a better person; I should know as I have been separated from so many loved ones in my life. Having good and loving people there with you everyday makes your heart feel overwhelmed with peace. But sadly, like all chapters in the story of life, this one too had an expiry date for each superhero. There came a time where one by one fate pulled them away from me and now it is pulling me away from them. Whilst I know that they will remain a part of my life; it’s hard to accept that they won’t be around me every day.
So to honour their superhero powers I want to share with you a glimpse of what they mean to me.
I’ll start off with Miss Love; she is the true definition of love and beauty. A beautiful woman inside and out, she shines like the stars, the moon and the sun all combined together. When I lost all hope of innocence and beauty she would be the one I would turn to because all she had to do was smile for me to be inspired to do the same. She truly makes your heart feel warm with love.
Then there is Miss Brilliant (in every possible way). She’s the smartest girl I have ever met and she’s the perfect combination of logic and sensitivity; a beautiful soul who inspires me to be a better and stronger person. She brings so much joy to my life.
There is a special Miss Grace, she’s helped me heal wounds related to the loss of my beloved grandmother. I have no doubt that my late grandmother sent her to help me forgive myself for not being there when she passed. Miss Grace is incredibly funny and wise, she understands me and lets me know that everything will be ok. I’m sure that in addition to being a superhero she is also a queen.
Another superhero is Miss loyal. She’s truly one of a kind and I’ve missed her since she’s moved away; but she’s showed me that the distance won’t stop the fun times and the memories forming between us. She is a mature soul who motivates you and supports you with all your endeavours in life.
I’ve also met Miss No Inhibition, she has a unique power in that she just has fun all the time regardless of where she is or who she is with. She taught me to not shy away from being my loud weird self and that no matter how lame your jokes are they’re still worth telling.
Then of course there is Miss Talker and before you start questioning how that is a superhero power let me convince you. She energises me and is always there to not only listen, but to talk to me. I’m a huge extravert and as such I need this interaction and engagement in order to re-energise and refuel for my daily interactions and challenges. She helps me be open and comfortable with my thoughts and emotions and she never dismisses my feelings no matter how silly they may seem. She’s is a valuable gem in my world.
And last but not least is Mr Peaceful he’s got many superhero powers but his strongest one is his ability to make everyone feel calm and peaceful just by being around his presence. He doesn’t say much but he has a way of making you learn from him everyday. I can write and say many things about his strengths and his influence, but nothing will do him justice. He’s my role model and an inspiration to those around him. He’s at balance with everything and teaches you how to just be you. He’s the kind of superhero that you want around everyday and everywhere; we need more people like him. I’m so grateful to him for all he has done; simply by being his incredible loving self.
There is one last superhero that I want to mention; the hidden eighth superhero that is inspired by all the rest. Miss Dreamer. You see my superhero power is the power of believing the good in others and this world; for persevering through lifes challenges by not giving up on anything and anyone that is good. My power allows me to see and feel the powers of the superheroes around me; and for that I am truly grateful.
From one superhero to another, don’t give up on finding and using your own powers; because everyone is a superhero in their own right and everyone has the ability to be someone elses superhero.
Love always,
Miss Dreamer
