A few days ago when I was journalling I recalled the homework I was required to do in Iran when I was in primary school. The homework was rewriting the given words over and over again so you could learn how to spell them. I found this task such a bore and so tedious so I thought I was being clever when I realised that if I write the words in really big handwriting then I don’t have to write as much. It makes me chuckle thinking of the 6 year old me who was being cheeky in getting out of doing her homework.
On this day when I was journalling, I was really anxious. I mean I was incredibly anxious about the pandemic, about all the uncertainty. I was losing my balance and I didn’t know what to do because I just wanted to escape out of it. But as I was journalling something called me to write down some words that mean something to me. Like hope, love, peace, now, trust etc. So I started writing whatever word was coming to me and kept repeating the word until the next word arrived. Surprisingly, it was really soothing because after writing the same word over and over again it helped me find my grounding in those words and guided me back to my centre.
I wasn’t trying to make my hand writing big anymore nor was I bored with this task, instead I was grateful that without even realising it, the homework I learned in school turned into a tool that allowed me to calm myself down, to self soothe.
I enjoyed the practice and it’s one I think I will use once more. I want to share it with you, in case you too are anxious. I found that writing it was helpful and then reading it was joyful. SO, I write it here for you, should you wish to utilise this space to find peace, calm and remember that you will get through anything.

When you feel anxious, try this with your own words. Try finding focus through repetition and through what brings you joy.
You’re never alone, even if it may feel that way.
Love Always,
