I love music, particularly music that has good lyrics. Words have a way of igniting my entire soul. They make me feel alive and feel deeply human and spirit at the same time. When I listen to music that can tap into my depth of being, I feel like I am at the intersection of human and soul; where there is no divide, just being. It’s precious and it’s very flowing. Sometimes it can be hard to digest all the various emotions and feelings that arise and all the wisdom and intuition that floods in. The other day I was listening to a new random playlist on Spotify and then the song ‘The Climb’ by Miley Cyrus came on.
Right there the lyrics, they took me to the intersection of human and soul that I needed to visit during the pandemic with all the uncertainties. There were gems of reminders in there that were so healing and so important to be brought into my consciousness. She starts out with talking about a dream that she can almost see, the doubts that flood in with the internal narratives of how she will never reach it and how defeated she’s feeling because she doesn’t feel like any progress is being made. But then her wisdom kicks in as the lyrics transition into the importance of faith, perseverance, and I suppose gaining the perspective that is important to maintain when you’re faced with such challenge and adversity.
The part of the chorus that really gets me is “there is always gonna be another mountain, I’m always gonna wanna make it move, always gonna be an uphill battle, sometimes I’m gonna have to lose”. This part of the chorus, is the part that has made me realise why it’s so important to be present. If you’re waiting for a time in your life where you won’t have any challenge, difficulty, pain or hardship, then you may be waiting forever. It’s not about doom and gloom, it’s really important to stay hopeful and optimistic about your future. But you also need to understand that life is full of surprises and that we often won’t get what we want, but that doesn’t mean what we get can’t be precious or healing. What’s more, things always work out in the way they need to, so you can get the beautiful blessings that you can’t even imagine, because you’ve never allowed yourself and or haven’t stretched yourself far enough.
Right now with this pandemic so many of us are so focused on what tomorrow will look like and are looking forward to it all changing or going back to ‘normal’. But this pandemic itself has shown us that there is nothing we can be certain about in life and therefore, we need to practice coming back to now. When you practice coming back into the now, things aren’t as heavy. You’re not trying to solve problems, you’re not trying to control anything or anyone. When you come back to now, to this very moment, you realise how much is going right and how much is going your way. I mean, the fact that you are taking a breath and are alive is enough. Everything on top of that is the cherry on top, we’ve become so focused on getting the cherry that we forget that all the sundae is underneath it.
I want to retrain my brain to come back to the now, I’ve had so much trauma and change in my life that I know nothing is forever. I used to think because of this I need to control things, so that I can make the most out of every last moment of the calm. But that didn’t work in my favour either, since I was very stressed and too in my head to recognise that I had left my body and the present moment behind. Taking a breath and coming back into your body, so you can feel the billions of cells that are working around the clock to sustain you is a surreal feeling. Being in the now, knowing that nothing can harm you, that there is no pain just bliss, is a feeling that I want to expand and nurture.
There are so many of us grieving right now, we’ve lost those that are special to us, we’re afraid, we’re hurting. Dreams have been crushed, livelihoods lost, weddings and celebrations postponed, relationships broken down, physical and mental health jeopardised. Focusing on all of this will literally add zero value and change to the experience, it will only push you into the depths of hell itself. But, these circumstances aren’t hell, because there is always, always, something beautiful that you can find and focus your attention on. Sometimes you have to search super hard for it, but it’s always there. That’s why nature is so healing, if you can’t find anything beautiful in you own life then look to the sky, to the trees and flowers. To anything you can find and hold onto it. Pay attention to that, zoom your focus in on the beautiful things that you can find. No matter how small or insignificant they may seem.
Give your chance to heal, give yourself the chance to become present. Don’t let everything outside of you deny you of the peace, joy and love you deserve. Do this for you.
Love yourself.
Love Always,
M
