“How could nature, that which is natural, be modified?”
This powerful question, that was raised in last weeks Philosophy class, really made me pause. Having a psychology background I am no stranger to the question of Nature vs Nurture. But when I heard this simple yet powerful question I realised that there is a subtle difference in the intent behind this question compared to Nature vs Nurture. This was drawing attention to our nature which is that of human in a physical sense and that of consciousness which I call the soul. This is talking about the essence which connects all of us, irrespective of the nature and nurture cards that we have been dealt.
The best way to explain this question is using a natural world example. I have a Swiss cheese plant that I’m growing at the moment, as it was growing I noticed the stems were growing in different directions. So, I decided to take different tools and manipulate the direction in which the stems were growing. I ultimately tried to shape the plant in a way that I wanted it to form (nurture). This particular plant has its own unique characteristics compared to other Swiss cheese plants, it’s growing a certain number of stems and leaves, each with their own predetermined lengths and sizes (nature). Although I am manipulating the shape of this plant and how it grows, I’m not modifying it as I am ultimately unable to change the essence of the plant from being a Swiss cheese. In other words, I can try however I want but I can’t make this plant into a cactus. This is what the question is talking about, how could nature, that which is natural, be modified? For me the answer is clear, that it can’t be. I know that in the space of genetics science is trying to test this and I’m sure humans have sourced / found ways to manipulate and modify plants and other species how they want. But even that would have its limitations.
Reflecting on this question is powerful because it can help you unveil your own true nature and look at your essence beyond your conditioning and beyond the traits that you’ve inherited. When you are able to unveil the different layers and arrive at the place where you can sense, see and experience your true essence you start to recognise how vast, beautiful and free you really are. It can really help shine light on the power of the mind and how on a daily basis it is distracting you from the source in which that is your true nature.
There is so much in the world that is unpleasant and unkind, there is so much that we need to resolve and improve. There are so many individuals that are stricken by fear, guilt, shame, hurt and all shades of pain. But underneath it all there is a common source of connection through our essence and if we can tap into that common source of truth through practice, we can free ourselves from so many thoughts and narratives that are constraining us and creating further suffering. It starts at the individual level but it ripples through to the collective as we are all connected in our human experiences.
There is so much wander in your Soul Journey and there is so much that is waiting to be discovered by you. It won’t always be easy, but it will be worthwhile. Your nature has not left your side, it never will. When you’re ready go in and explore it it will show you so much beauty that your whole life can change.
Love Always,
M
