Dance of a lifetime…

So much of our life is spent being serious, on the go, working away at something. But there are moments of magic waiting to happen and the body is the vessel that can show you how. One of the most beautiful ways to experience this is through dance and movement. For me, watching dancers transforms me into a world of possibilities; there is something sacred in the art of dance that can really cleanse your mind and open your heart.

This could because of my own personal love for dance, as a little kid I always wanted to grow up and become a dancer but that dream was stored away in my late teens when I realised that the expectation of being an adult isn’t about pursuing what brings you joy in life, instead it’s about the security, stability and pride that will keep you in race. 12 years on and I realise that my young self wasn’t given the guidance and or the support she needed to make well informed decisions for herself. Packing away my love for dance has happened gradually and slowly, without even my own awareness. I suppose this is what happens when you are heart broken about a love that you cannot have; or at least, believe that you cannot have it.

Going back to the space of dance now feels painful and heavy, but that’s because I’m punishing my younger self for forming a belief that hasn’t served her since. It’s time I let go of that judgement and forgive her, she was only young and wanted to fit into the world. I don’t know how my path with dance will re-ignite but I felt compelled to write this poem because to me dance, even now, is the most beautiful and powerful of art forms. It is in its essence life itself, the ability to move through life can enable you to gain so much wisdom and truths. Perhaps this is why the Dervish’s spend so much time twirling.

Pursue your dreams and aspirations, choose love and joy over money and status; the latter is a dead end where eventually you will become hollow.

Dance of a life time:

Sit with it, the discomfort.

It will not be easy, but it will be purposeful.

Then, when the time comes, let it all go.

Dance, jump, sway, fall,

Let the energy come through you.

There will be highs, there will be lows,

Are you ready for the flight and the fall?

It doesn’t matter how far you go,

Allow your body and all it’s wisdom to guide you,

It will take you to places that you could not have imagined,

It will show you things you could not have dreamt,

It will help you uncover and discover both at once,

Unveiling all the beauty that is hidden from your awareness.

The light, it is in your heart,

The music, it’s in your body,

Every part of you was made to swirl and twirl,

let it come, let it go,

Let it move, let it BE.

There will be moments, mere seconds that will alter your whole path,

Be present in every corner, for you cannot turn back.

Jump into faith,

Trusting that it will lead you to only love, joy, peace and acceptance.

There is only one chance to join in on the dance of a lifetime,

So find your own rhythm,

Find your own tune,

You were born to move.
