See the snowball, stop the avalanche…

Disappointment is an experience that we can’t avoid. When things don’t go my way or when I lose control I can sense a level of disappointment washing over me. Sometimes I’m disappointed with myself and other times it’s with the person across from me. It’s natural to feel disappointed but, what doesn’t serve you is staying in that state of mind longer than what is required for you to learn from it what you need.

Dwelling on our disappointments doesn’t make them any smaller and or bearable, if anything it makes them feel bigger and more damaging than what they were. It’s like a snowball effect where it starts off as one tiny snowball then it turns into an avalanche before you know it and we all know we don’t want to get stuck in an avalanche.

So, what to do? We’ve got a choice around how we choose to respond, we’ve got the ability to decide how we want to show up and what we want to focus on. Seeing the snowball and recognising that it’s going to turn into the avalanche is the first step. Once you recognise it and label it for what it is, you can put a hold on the events that are about to follow. To do this successfully, you need to step into your body and become present.

Being present is the single most empowering gift you can give yourself. It’s also one of the most challenging things one can achieve, with all the distractions, to do lists, responsibilities etc. it’s so easy to stay in our heads and forget our bodies. Even those of us who are active and exercise, if you are obsessing over your reps, or your technique etc. you aren’t really present with your movements or sensations. You’re just using your body to craft an image and or achieve a goal that is head based. That is not stepping into your body, that is using your body.

The choices we make when we see the snowball is what will determine if we live in joy or in suffering. I can tell you now that suffering is a lot easier if you’ve become used to it, but it’s unpleasant and it makes you miserable in the long run. So, if you want to live in joy you have to put in energy and practice into recognising the choice points and making the choices that serve you.

This is the practice, this is all part of the Soul Journey. This is how you set yourself free.

Love Always,

M
